"Nothing about us, without us" "I'm not a case, I don't need to be managed" |

In a recently completed study, consumers were asked to rate those qualities that contributed to their recovery and barriers to recovery. Among the barriers identified were professional attitudes about persons with serious and persistent mental illness. Consumers strongly recommended that providers learn more about rehabilitation, empowerment and recovery (Marsh et. al., "A Person-Driven System; Implications for Theory, Research and Practice," Psychological and Social Aspects of Psychiatric Disability. 1996). In addition to a shift in provider attitudes towards recovery, consumers have also cited the importance of choice and self-directed activities. For people with psychiatric disabilities, peer support can help individuals develop social networks, improve their ability to participate in their own treatment, and connect with ongoing services and community supports.
